The lighthouse was built between 1914 and 1916 on a small plateau named Hudishibana, an Aruban Indian name. It was named after a steamship called the Californian which has gone down in history as being in close proximity to the Titanic as she disappeared into the water. The Californian received distress signals from the Titanic but due to a sleepy radio operator, did not respond. In turn, perhaps due to poetic justice, the Californian also sank - in rough seas off the coast of Aruba.
